Rotary Club Kiwanis
 
Robert G. Thornhill III (Tri)

Tri Thornhill is a member of Lakeland Downtown Kiwanis club, which focuses on charities for children.  In 2011, Mr. Thornhill helped organize the “Peanut Auction” which is a silent auction to fund all the charity works of Kiwanis as well as raise money for AMIKids, an organization that helps children at risk.  For more on Kiwanis, click here Mr. Thornhill is also a member of Justice Teaching, an organization that teaches students about the justice system.  Mr. Thornhill talks with all 7th grade students at Daniel Jenkins Middle School in Haines City, Florida.   For more on Justice Teaching, please visit www.justiceteaching.org. Tri also delivers groceries monthly to homebound seniors with VISTE, Volunteers in Service to the Elderly, which can be reached at www.viste.org


John L. Acken

John Acken is a member of the Board of Directors of the Haines City Rotary Club.    Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Mr. Acken helps organize the Annual Death By Chocolate Event which raises funds to continue Rotary’s fight against Polio, to purchase school supplies for local elementary schools, to build wheelchair ramps for needy disabled citizens of our community, and to provide scholarships for local graduating high school seniors.  In addition to his work at Rotary, Mr. Acken volunteers as a youth baseball coach for Lakeland City Baseball.


Sherri Scarborough

Sherri Scarborough is a member of the Winter Haven Rotary Club which strives to put service before self.  In 2011, Mrs. Scarborough helped fellow Rotarians raise money to purchase uniforms for local elementary students, dictionaries for middle school kids, and a $5,000.00 annual college scholarship.  In 2012, Mrs. Scarborough will be helping to package 50,000 meals for the hungry to be given away in the Winter Haven area.  Mrs. Scarborough also supports The Mission in Winter Haven which helps feed and clothe the hungry and those in need.  Every year The Mission collaborates with local churches and collects thousands of toys to be given away for Christmas to needy families locally.   The parents are allowed to “shop” for free and choose the gifts that best suit their children’s Christmas wishes. Spencer Pastorin

Spencer Pastorin is very involved in the Kiwanis Club of Davenport Four Corners.   Kiwanians are volunteers changing the world through service to children and communities.  Mr. Pastorin’s Kiwanis group is involved in maintaining the pantry and feeding elementary school children at Loughman Oaks Elementary through the Green Bag Project.    Additionally, each month Mr. Pastorin and his Kiwanis group and their spouses volunteer at Give Kids the World Village, which hosts terminally ill children who are visiting the Central Florida area.

Kiwanis service projects include helping raise money for the Sunshine Foundation Dream Village in Loughman.   The Sunshine Foundation Dream Village helps make dreams come true for chronically ill or abused children.

Shawn A. Jiles

Shawn Jiles is the Secretary of the Bartow Rotary Club.  The club’s mission statement is “Service Above Self” and Shawn takes that mission very seriously.  Mr. Jiles is very active in organizing charitable events to raise money for dictionaries to be distributed to elementary age students.  Mr. Jiles helps to raise money for international projects as well.  One of the primary goals of Rotary is to completely eradicate polio around the world and Mr. Jiles is active in the many fundraising events locally to support that goal.  Mr. Jiles is also the chairman of a committee sponsoring a day long picnic outing bringing prospective adoptive parents together with older children awaiting to be adopted.  Through the Lakeland Bar Association, Shawn coaches high school debate and mock trial teams at George Jenkins High School and Teneroc High School.  Mr. Jiles teaches the students public speaking, persuasion, critical thinking, and presentation.
